Make it worth saying

Words are important instruments in all our daily lives. For the most part it’s how we go about letting those around us know how we are feeling, what we are doing, where we are going, what we need from them. They are one of most vital communication tools. It’s our choice whether we finely tune the words we use every day and mold them into what we truly want to say. We do have the option of just throwing them out there without thought and in a haphazard way, hoping they somehow will magically rearrange themselves once they leave our mouth before they reach another’s ears. I suppose it depends on how we want those words perceived or interpreted. Words can be a speaker’s best friend and an angry person’s worst enemy.

Speaker’s take great care when preparing speeches in the hopes that we are using just the right words to convey our message. They are our livelihood and when we are in front of an audience words are what we use to take people on a journey with us. Do we do the same while speaking candidly or privately? Are we as careful with our words when speaking to our family, our friends, our coworkers, sales people or strangers? I believe we should be.

I’d like to ask everyone who reads this to do a little mental exercise right now. For just a moment or two, think over the words you’ve used today. Are you satisfied with them? Did they convey what you needed them to? Were they worthy? Drop me a line and let me know.

Words in and of themselves are nothing, it’s up to each of us to make our words worth something.

  1. Good afternoon Marsha,
Just wanted to let you know that you indeed have readers “out there in cyberspace.” Our words are indeed more than their denotation and even their connotation. Everything surrounding the delivery of words affects both speaker and listener -attitude, knowledge, baggage and so on.
Today I was co-presenter of a leadership workshop on team building and effective listening. From the feedback I received I can conclude that my words served us all well.
